NEXT EDITION OF THE MARITIME IRELAND RADIO SHOW JUNE 3

The June edition of the MARITIME IRELAND RADIO SHOW will be issued next Friday, June 3. We’ll be hearing from the Minister for the Marine, discussing with a former seafarer the maritime traditions of Arklow and why he and his brother have composed a ballad about the worst fishing tragedy at the famous Wicklow Port experienced. People who have put the names of deceased relatives on the new lifeboat at Clifden, Co.Galway, will describe their emotion when it arrived. We’ll hear how those who worked for the Bell Lines shipping company out of Waterford gathered to remember their ships and we’ll got to the home of the “small family oriented sailing club run by volunteers with a love for sailingfeel the people of Ireland are ready to hear more about the sport of sailing.” As always, a programme to bring you enjoyment, information and pride in Ireland’s maritime sector.  

GREENORE
Greenore Port

173 ships called to Greenore Port in Co.Louth last year, compared with 173 the previous year. It is the only privately-owned port in Ireland, a subsidiary of Doyle Shipping Group. Gross tonnage has increased with more arrivals of Dry Bulk vessels.

DUBLIN PORT
Dublin Port

Dublin Port Company launched a water safety awareness campaign to promote safe and responsible use of Dublin Bay for leisure and recreation this summer. A survey commissioned by DPC showed that half of respondents said they were not well attuned to water safety. On the June edition of the MARITIME IRELAND RADIO SHOW Dublin Harbour Master, Capt.Michael McKenna, will discuss boating safety issues and point out restrictions which leisure craft must observe in a commercial harbour.

THIS WEEK

NEW OBJECTIVES IN MARINE PLANNING………. New objectives on energy and the role of the fishing industry in food security are amongst issues identified in the Marine Planning Framework consultation document published this week. It contains public response to the Government’s proposed framework and can be downloaded from the website of the Department of Local Government and Heritage.

 CORK PORT DEAL……… A deal at an undisclosed sum has been agreed between Cork City Council and Cork Port Company for the purchase of the former port docks area close to the city centre. The area covers 1.5 kms of quayside, still in use though limited since the port moved the major part of its operations downriver to Ringaskiddy in the lower harbour area. The Council was reported to have previously offered €36m. for the site, but the new agreement may be at a much lower rate.

CRUISE SHIP FIRE……… Passengers posted photos of funnel fire aboard Carnival Freedom cruise ship at Grand Turk Island which happened on Thursday. Carnival Cruise Line said “emerfgency response team quickly extinguished fire inside funnel. All guests and crew are safe.”,

CODLING WIND PARK SURVEY……………  A four-week geotechnical survey for the Codling Wind Park project is to start on June 6. It will involve “a geotechnical investigation to characterise the potential export cable corridor. The works will be conducted at a single location at any given time. The Codling Wind Park is 7 nautical miles (13 kms) off the coast near Wicklow.
