On this month’s edition of the only Podcast and radio programme about the maritime sector in Ireland, we discuss the selection of offshore wind far development sites. While the importance of alternative wind energy is essential and generally agreed, there are other aspects which are not being discussed – the maritime spatial squeeze which they and other marine developments are creating. And a main question arising – Why has the Department of Housing been given control of maritime planning with no role for the Department of the Marine in an island nation? Fishermen say they are not being given the input they were promised about where offshore wind turbines would be placed and no one appears to be able to answer the question of how many wind turbines there will be around the Irish coastline. On the programme we also hear a proposal to include maritime matters in the schools’ curriculum and talk to a sailor building a mini boat to race around the world.
